Mark Allen
Technical Consultant
Bay Area, CA
40-year IT veteran. Former VP of Engineering. Now an independent consultant writing about how real operators evaluate custom software vs SaaS.
About Mark
Mark spent 40 years in the IT industry. In his last corporate role he was VP of Engineering. He always wanted to start his own business and finally took the plunge in mid-2018, starting a print marketing business. When COVID hit he pivoted back to his technical roots and became an independent computer consultant.
That combination — deep engineering leadership plus hands-on small-business operator experience — is exactly the vantage point AltStack's readers need. Mark writes about custom software from the perspective of someone who has both shipped enterprise systems and run a bootstrapped business.
When not consulting, Mark can be found on one of the many golf courses in the Bay Area, or playing ice hockey once a week in San Mateo. For many years he coached youth hockey and baseball in Buffalo, NY — his hometown.
